Washington D.C– American Rivers President and CEO Tom Kiernan issued the following statement on the passing of Representative Raul Grijalva, a longtime advocate for the environment and rivers:

“Today, our nation lost a champion for rivers and all the life that depends on them. Rep. Raúl Grijalva served in Congress for more than 20 years, and for much of that time was chair of the Natural Resources Committee. He understood the importance of clean water and rivers to the health and well-being of communities in Arizona and nationwide. He was a staunch advocate for the Colorado River and other Arizona rivers, and supported infrastructure improvements and clean water access for Tribes. He also championed protections for the Grand Canyon which led to the creation of the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. Rep. Grijalva leaves a remarkable legacy in the lands, waters, wildlife, and communities he stood for.”
