American Rivers honors Indigenous leadership in river protection, policy, and land management. We work together with Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities to prioritize protecting and restoring rivers that are culturally and ecologically significant and fundamental to their cultural identity – today, and since time-immemorial. We acknowledge the sovereignty of Tribal Nations and their essential role as leaders and co-governors in conserving natural resources in their ancestral lands, and honor the traditional ecological knowledge, practices, and perspectives held by Indigenous communities.
