Favorite River: The Russian River, in Northern California, is the river I know best, but I’ve had wonderful experiences on rivers in Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Virginia, France and Chicago River.

River Story: I was able to travel to the Elwah River, on the Olympic Penninsula, and spend a weekend with scientists and naturalists who were working to restore the river after two dams were removed. It was an inspiration to see the speedy recovery of the nearshore, the volunteers planting thousands of trees and plants on the former lakebeds and the restoration to restore the winding slow flow of the river needed to maintain the gravel beds needed for spawning salmon. Truly remarkable weekend seeing dam removal and river restoration up close.
